Astounding Origami by Nguyễn Hùng Cường

Paper artist Nguyễn Hùng Cường lives and works in Hanoi and folds many of his original, distinctly expressive origami works using a Vietnamese handmade paper called Dó. Cường tells All Things Paper that he began folding around the age of five or six and although his work has been featured in numerous popular books on origami, he has not yet made it his full-time career. See much more of his work on Flickr. All photos courtesy the artist. (via all things paper)

Fifteen rape victims have formed martial arts movement and are prepared to confront abusers if no one listens to their complaints…

A GROUP of women are fighting back against the sickening culture of rape which they say infects India. Fifteen determined females – all victims themselves – have trained in martial arts and are prepared to hand out rough justice if no one listens to their complaints. And the movement, called the Red Brigade, is growing rapidly following the gang rape and murder of medical student Jyoti Singh Pandey that horrified the world.

In a nation where a woman is reportedly raped every 20 minutes, the group’s leader Usha Vishwakarma said: “We are fighting back – and the boot is now on the other foot.” Member Sufia Hashmi, 17, said: “We’ve caught a lot of men recently. I joined because men always used to pass comments on me and touch my body but now we beat them and they run.”

Like the other members in the northern city of Lucknow, 25- year-old Usha has first-hand experience of the daily dangers women face in the huge nation – a teacher tried to rape her when she was 18. She said: “He grabbed me and tried to open my trousers. I kicked him in the crotch and ran.” Usha complained to staff but they told her to forget it and allowed her attacker to carry on teaching. She said: “Many parents tell girls to quit school so there will be no sexual violence. But we said no – this has to stop. We decided to form a group to fight for ourselves, not just complain.”MORE

Absolutely fascinating analysis about the Antikythera mechanism.

…We report progress in reading a passage of one inscription that appears to describe the front of the Mechanism as a representation of a Greek geocentric cosmology, portraying the stars, Sun, Moon, and all five planets known in antiquity. Complementing this, we propose a new mechanical reconstruction of planetary gearwork in the Mechanism, incorporating an economical design closely analogous to the previously identified lunar anomaly mechanism, and accounting for much unresolved physical evidence.

Today in Taksim, Istanbul, Turkey, protestors were attacked by police officers with tear gas and water canons. The protest was about the Gezi Parkı, which is one of the rare places left with hundred years old trees, getting destroyed so a mall could be built. Protestors, which included babies, children and very old people, started camping there so trees wouldn’t be cut four days ago. Today, around 5 am, protestors got attacked in their sleep. Tear gasses were sprayed right in their eyes and their tents were burnt. It didn’t end with that. They continued attacking citizens with tear gas and and water canons and blocked their way of escape. A wall collapsed on citizens running from police officers. Tear gasses were not thrown on air, but on protestors’ head. Ambulances weren’t let in to treat injured people. Shops nearby let protestor hide inside, but police officers threw tear gasses inside. Trains headed to Taksim were also attacked with tear gasses, and the exit doors were closed on them. Citizens opened their houses for help. Medical students and lawyers (for people who got arrested) shared their location and numbers on internet. Hotels assured rooms for injured people and were tranformed into hospitals for the time being. Although all roads leading to Taksim were blocked, people walked their way in to help. Lots of people were seriously injured and died. The attack still hasn’t stopped. Turkish media is censored, so we’re seeking help from you. Please share this and let the world known.

This is the second in a series of three videos exploring the Damsel in Distress trope in video games. In this installment we look at the “dark and edgy” side of the trope in more modern games and how the plot device is often used in conjunction with graphic depictions of violence against women. Over the past decade we’ve seen developers try to spice up the old Damsel in Distress cliche by combining it with other tropes involving victimized women including the disposable woman, the mercy killing and the woman in the refrigerator.

Due to the nature of the topic, this video comes with a trigger warning for violence against women.

For more information and a full transcript visit: http://www.feministfrequency.com/2013/05/damsel-in-distress-part-2-tropes-vs-women/

DEFINITIONS:

The Damsel in Distress: As a trope the damsel in distress is a plot device in which a female character is placed in a perilous situation from which she cannot escape on her own and must then be rescued by a male character, usually providing an incentive or motivation for the protagonist’s quest. This is most often accomplished via kidnapping but it can also take the form of petrification, a curse or demon possession. Traditionally the woman in distress is a love interest or family member of the hero; princesses, wives, girlfriends and sisters are all commonly used to fill the role.

Damsel in the Refrigerator: A combination of the Women in Refrigerators trope and the Damsel in Distress trope. Typically this happens when a female character is killed near the beginning of a story but her soul is then stolen or trapped and must be rescued or freed by the male hero. Occasionally time travel or some other form of resurrection may be involved in the quest to bring the women in question back from the dead.

Disposable Damsel: A variant of the Damsel in Distress trope in which the hero fails to save the woman in peril either because he arrives too late or because (surprise twist!) it turns out she has been dead the whole time.

Euthanized Damsel: A combination of the Damsel in Distress trope and the Mercy Killing trope. This usually happens when the player character must murder the woman in peril “for her own good”. Typically the damsel has been mutilated or deformed in some way by the villain and the “only option left” to the hero is to put her “out of her misery” himself. Occasionally the damsel’ed character will be written so as beg the player to kill her.

Why doesn’t anyone discuss how society’s perceived ownership of the female body extends into parents who dictate everything their daughters do?

Not letting your daughters express themselves in how they dress, talk, wear their hair, or whether or not they wear makeup just gives them the idea, from an extremely young age, that their body is not their own and they must please others by making it look how they view best.
Learn that before you have children.
